12th-Ranked Seminoles Defeat No. 20 Wake Forest 2-0 For First ACC Win

Oct. 7, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The 12th-ranked Seminoles entered Saturday night’s ACC match against Wake Forest with history against them. Florida State soccer had never won five-straight matches. Florida State hadn’t defeated an ACC team in Tallahassee since 1996. Florida State hadn’t beaten an ACC opponent anywhere since October 18, 1998 and they had never won seven home matches in a single season. All of that history came crumbling down when the Seminoles raised their record to 10-4 with a 2-0 victory over No. 20 Wake Forest (6-6-1) in front of 866 fans.

“We were close to an ACC win so many times last season and twice already this year,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “It’s been a long time and history was not on our side. We were fighting a very good Wake team but we were also fighting the past tonight.”

The Seminoles started the scoring 34 minutes into the first half when freshman Emma Breland recorded her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Senior Sarah Deacon crossed the ball into the box where Maren Vik Edvardsen flicked the ball to Breland. Breland proceeded to bury the shot in the lower right corner beating Demon Deacon goalie Tracy Chao.

“It’s been a long time since we got an ACC win here,” said Breland. “I take a lot of pride in helping this team win any way I can but it’s fun to put the ball in the net. Getting this first win is going to give us a lot of confidence as we continue playing in the ACC. It was an awesome win tonight.”

Wake Forest staged a furious attempt at a comeback firing 17 total shots and eight second half shots at senior goalkeeper Sarah Crawford. Crawford recorded a season-high 12 saves and her second straight shutout.

“Sarah had a fantastic game,” said goalkeeper coach John Galas. “This is the second straight game where she has come up with some huge saves. She’s giving us that senior leadership we need and hopefully that will carry us through the remainder of the season.”

Crawford’s biggest save may have come on a 25-yard blast by Demon Deacon sophomore Joline Charlton. Crawford was able to just get a hand on the shot and force it to the crossbar where it ricocheted back into the field and was then cleared by the Seminole defense.

“Everyone has played a big role in our success this season and the defense came up huge tonight,” said Crawford. “I won’t take anymore credit than the team as a whole deserves. They played awesome in front of me tonight. I didn’t think Joline’s shot was going to go in but then it started to dip and I was able to get a hand on it. I just wanted to go and kiss my post after that one.”

The Seminoles put the game away in the 89th minute on a counter attack after Wake Forest began to press for the equalizing goal. Sophomore Meredith Jones sent a long ball down to Maren Vik Edvardsen who managed to stay on-sides and collect the pass. Vik Edvardsen, FSU’s all-time goal and point scorer, tucked the ball into the lower right corner of the net sealing Florida State’s victory.

“I am very happy with our performance tonight,” said Baker. “Sarah was tested a few times but the bottom line is scoring goals and we’re doing that this season. We have to build on this victory as we enter a big stretch of ACC matches.”

The Seminoles return to action Saturday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Raleigh, NC to face the North Carolina State Wolfpack. FSU then returns home Tuesday, October 17th to face 16-time National Champion North Carolina at 7:00 pm.

NOTE: Florida State soccer set an all-time season attendance record Saturday night against Wake Forest. The Seminoles have now drawn 5758 fans this season eclipsing the all-time attendance mark set in 1996 (5106).
