TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State Women’s Soccer program turns 20 in 2014! In conjunction with celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Seminole soccer team will countdown the top 20 moments over the last 19 seasons.

Join the Seminoles throughout the fall on and through their social media outlets on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as the program takes a look back in history to honor this monumentally occasion by unveiling the top 20 moments.

The countdown begins at No. 20 with the program’s very first game, all the way back in 1995.

#20: First game in program history

Twenty years ago the Florida State Athletics Department embarked on a new era introducing women’s soccer as its 19th Division I sport.  Under the direction of head coach Heather Kerby-Nelson, the Seminoles hit the road to face intra-state rival Florida in their inaugural match on September 2, 1995. Despite falling to the Gators, 4-0, that Saturday afternoon, what many didn’t realize was the start of Florida State Soccer blossoming into one of the top collegiate programs in the nation.

  • Florida State was outshot 37-6 in the match.
  • Lauren Lynch, who finished the season with 14 points on six goals and two assists, led the Seminoles with four shots against the Gators.
  • Starting goalkeeper Melissa Juhl was credited with 16 saves in the match.
  • The Seminoles and Gators played in front of 4,442 inside James G. Pressly Stadium – the third largest crowd to witness a match in the series in Gainesville and the fourth largest crowd all-time.
