2009 Seminole Recruiting Class Receives Top 10 Ranking

Sept. 30, 2008

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 2009 Florida State baseball recruiting class, which features 13 newcomers for the upcoming season, was ranked eighth nationally as announced by Collegiate Baseball. This marks the 25th consecutive year that Collegiate Baseball has evaluated recruiting classes in Division I.

This year’s class features 10 freshmen and three transfer students. Among the transfers are infielder Rafael Lopez (Indian River Community College), Robby Stahl (Tallahassee Community College) and Mike Meschke (North Florida Community College).

Of the 13 incoming freshmen, five were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft on June 8 but opted to postpone their major league career and begin college life as Seminoles this fall. Kyle Long (St. Anne’s-Belfield School; Ivy, Va.) and Sean Gilmartin (Crespi Carmelite HS; Moorpark, Calif.) were the highest freshmen draftees selected in the 23rd round (Chicago White Sox) and 31st round (San Diego Padres), respectively. Right handed pitcher Austin Wood was picked by the Houston Astros in the 36th round, while southpaw Kris Castellanos was also drafted by the Astros in round number 38. Right hander Hunter Scantling rounded out this year’s draft selections as he was picked in the 49th round by the Chicago Cubs.

The 2008 class consists of seven pitchers including four left handers, four infielders and two outfielders.

“We certainly feel like we had a very good recruiting class,” stated head coach Mike Martin. “Our eighth place ranking is very flattering. We like the young men that we brought in here. They filled the needs that we had and we are anxious to see how they materialize. I realize it’s still early, but I do like what I am seeing out of each and every one of these guys so far this fall.”
