TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The Florida State indoor volleyball program has announced the schedule for the 2014 season.
“Our schedule will be outstanding again this season,” FSU head coach Chris Poole said. “We are expecting a lot of leadership from our returning starters and we will work hard to blend in the new talent.”
The Seminoles return five starters from the 2013 squad that made their third NCAA Regional Semifinal appearance in school history after defeating a school record six AVCA Top 25 opponents (Western Kentucky, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Duke, Florida). FSU finished the year ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 17 in the RPI following a second place showing in the ACC.
Fifteen of the 30 matches will be played at home in Tully Gym, including a four-match home stand to finish the year. In addition, the Seminoles will face six teams that finished the 2013 year ranked in the top 25 (Nebraska, Florida, American, Marquette, Duke, North Carolina).
Florida State will open the year with 11 non-conference matches, facing eight opponents that played in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
The Seminoles will first hit the road to play in the AVCA Showcase, which features national powers Stanford, Iowa State and Nebraska. The Seminoles will first take on Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Ames, Iowa for a match with Iowa State on Aug. 31 at 1 p.m.
Following the AVCA Showcase, FSU will return to Tallahassee for its home-opener against Florida at 6 p.m. on Sept. 4.
“I’m a big believer in scheduling a competitive pre-conference schedule, so that the players learn how to win and how to overcome adversity early in the season,” Poole said. “Our Non-Conference RPI Ranking is always very high and I would expect the same this season. Most of our matches will be against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament and we know it will be a great challenge with the amount of new players that we have this season.”
Conference play will begin on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. with North Carolina coming into town. The Tar Heels are one of four squads (Clemson, NC State, Miami) the Seminoles will play twice during the 18-match ACC schedule.
For the second-consecutive season, the Seminoles will finish the year with a hefty home stand starting on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. against Boston College before hosting Syracuse (Nov. 23), Clemson (Nov.26) and Miami (Nov.28).
Prior to the AVCA Showcase, the Seminoles will participate in the Garnet & Gold/Alumni match at Tully Gym. The time will be determined at a later date.
