TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – This morning, sophomore Ruth Seaborne and junior Carolina De los Santos defeated the No. 26 team of Sofie Oyen and Alexandra Cercone from the University of Florida at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla. in order to secure a spot in the semifinals.
In the first round, they knocked off Jenna Doerfler and Courtney Fiffith from Central Florida 8-5 and then went on to top off the team of Viet Ha Ngo and Muriel Wacker out of Georgia Tech 8-4. This morning the pair continued to roll as the upset Oyen and Cercone 8-6. Tomorrow they will face No. 20 Kate Fuller and Lauren Herring representing Georgia.
Two of the three singles players are still competing in the main draw. De Los Santos defeated Aline Staudt from Jacksonville 7-6, 6-0 and will face No. 85 Caroline Hitimana in the following round today. Freshman Mia Vriens beat Tereza Lerova from Georgia State 6-3, 6-1 and will move on to face No. 124 Lynn Blau from Georgia Tech.
“We had a very good first day at our Regional Championships ,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “I was pleased to see some vast improvements from our last two events as we continue to pinpoint some specific things that we need to continue to work on. The girls were challenged in many different ways and I’m proud to see how well we came through day one.”
Saturday and Sunday will feature one round of doubles with two rounds of singles to follow and will begin at 9 a.m. Championship Monday will have the main and consolation finals in both doubles and singles. The start time is yet to be determined.
The singles and doubles champions from the event will secure automatic berths into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. There are at-large bids that could be made as well.
