Leading off Florida State University’s 18 graduating student athletes this Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, will be Allen Augustin, who is earning his masters degree in Integrated Marketing and Management Communications.

Graduation will take place at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center at 9 a.m.

A fifth year senior on the football field, Augustin earned a bachelors degree in Creative Writing in the spring of 2002 and decided immediately to enroll in grad school.

“I’m not the greatest player in the world, and someday I’m going to have to feed my family,” he said. “I didn’t want to take empty hours or waste the scholarship, so I applied to graduate school.”

The soft-spoken and humble Augustin doesn’t make a big deal out of the fact that he finished his undergraduate studies in three-and-a-half years, or that he went from walk-on to scholarship player to starter and standout in that same time.

When Augustin arrived here in 1999 from Miami Senior High School he had two hard-to-reconcile goals: graduate in three years and earn a scholarship to be on the football. He didn’t even expect to play.

“Starting was a dream, it wasn’t a goal,” he said.

From here Augustin will compete in his final game as a Seminole in the Orange Bowl New Year’s Day and then to the NFL combine this spring, where the dreaming process can begin again.

He says he’d like to play at the next level, but would be just as happy to find himself marketing and promoting a pro team.

“I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do after graduation, I just want to get to it,” he said.
