ACC Honors For Ward, Howard

Oct. 26, 2010

GREENSBORO, NC – Minutes before she was scheduled to take the court for photos, videos and interviews at the Greensboro Coliseum for the 2010-11 edition of ACC Women’s Basketball Media Day, Florida State’s Courtney Ward received a bit of good news.

FSU’s stellar senior point guard learned from conference officials that she was one of five student-athletes in the league to be named to the 2010-11 Preseason All-ACC Team.

A 2010 Second Team All-ACC selection, Tuesday’s announcement marks Ward’s first preseason honor as a Seminole.

Also nabbing an early accolade for the ‘Noles, was freshman sensation Natasha Howard. The 6-foot-3 do-it-all forward was named to the first-ever ACC Newcomer Watch List, which replaces the Preseason Rookie of the Year honor.

The watch list highlights freshmen — true and redshirt — and transfers that are expected to make an immediate impact in the conference.

League officials also announced Tuesday that in a vote of Blue Ribbon Panelists, Florida State is predicted to finish third in the ACC women’s basketball standings. The Seminoles garnered two first-place votes while Duke earned the top spot with 24 first-place tallies.

North Carolina is predicted to finish second by the Blue Ribbon Panel, which is made up of national and local media, as well as school representatives.

Ward and FSU head coach Sue Semrau will return to Tallahassee Tuesday night to rejoin the team and continue preparations for the start of the 2010-11 season. The Seminoles begin the year with a Nov. 12 home game against Alabama State at 6 p.m.
