Virginia Tech totaled 517 points and 62 top votes to lead the Coastal Division. Miami (487), Virginia (356), Georgia Tech (281), North Carolina (197) and Duke (94) rounded out the division.
In addition, the league writers also voted on a preseason All-ACC team for the first time this year. Senior tailback Leon Washington, junior linebacker Ernie Sims and senior safety Pat Watkins represented Florida State on the team. There were no unanimous selections. Both Washington and Boston College defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka were on 39 of 40 ballots. Kiwanuka narrowly edged Washington for preseason player of the year honors.
