ACC: Soccer Picked 2nd

Aug. 12, 2011

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State was picked to finish second in the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference preseason women’s soccer poll as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches as announced by the ACC on Friday, August 12.

The Seminoles earned 111 points, their highest point total in school history, and finished just six points behind North Carolina, who was the coaches’ preseason favorite for the 20th consecutive season. Florida State achieved another program first by receiving four first-place votes, one more than the previous school-record of three established back in 2006.

“The ACC is the best soccer conference in the nation and to be slated to finish second is a testament to the hard work our student-athletes turn out each year,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. “It’s an honor to see that our program has continued to earn the respect of our peers.”

Florida State returns nine starters including Tiffany McCarty and Jessica Price, who both missed the entire 2010 season due to injury. The Seminoles finished in a tie for second place in the ACC standings a year ago, while reaching the 16-win plateau for the sixth year in a row. FSU was one of two ACC schools that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Seminoles have been picked to finish in the top four of the ACC in nine of the last 10 seasons. This marks the sixth time in the program’s 17-year history that FSU has been slated to finish in second place. Since the arrival of head coach Mark Krikorian, Florida State has appeared in the NCAA Quarterfinals in each of his first six seasons while finishing no lower than second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference during that span.

Boston College, which represented the ACC in the 2010 Women’s College Cup, placed third. Five other teams that participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament followed in the voting. Virginia was picked fourth, followed by Maryland, Duke, defending ACC champion Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. NC State placed ninth, followed by Miami and Clemson.
