OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. –
Florida State All-Americans Matt Savage and Jonas Blixt are both tied for fourth in the individual standings and the No. 9 ranked Seminole men’s golf team is in third place in the team standings after two rounds of the Fighting Illini Invitational at the Olympia Fields Country Club. Savage and Blixt are only seven strokes behind the individual leader while the Seminoles begin play in Monday’s third and final round only 11 strokes behind Oklahoma State as they bid for their second team championship of the fall 2007 season.
Oklahoma State, which is ranked 13th in this week’s GolfWeek/Sagarin Power Rankings, holds the team lead after the first 36 holes of the 54 hole event. The Cowboys are led Rickie Fowler who shot a six under par 134 to take a two-shot lead of Jorge Campillo of Indiana in the individual standings.
Savage (Louisville, Ky.) carded a four-under par 66 in the second round and is in a tie fourth place in the individual standings. After carding a four-over par 74 and landing in a tie for 32nd place after the first round, Savage turned up the heat and moved up 28 positions in the individual standings with his near personal record single round score. Savage was five-under par over his last 11 holes of the afternoon. He came within one stroke of tying his career-low score of 65 which he shot during the third round of the 2006 NCAA East Regional and the third round of the 2007 gator Invitational.
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) also closed his day well as he shot a one-under par 69 in the second round. He was four-under par over his last 13 holes and has a two-round total of 140. He was tied for fifth after shooting a one-over par 71 in the first round. Blixt is playing for his third top five individual finish in three vents during the fall season.
Senior Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea), who is playing in his first event of the fall season, shot a two-over par 72 in the first round and is in a tie for 40th place in the individual standings after the first 36 holes. He carded four birdies and nine holes at par in the first round of the vent. Sophomore Seath Lauer (Huntington, Ill.) carded a two-over par 72 in the second round and has a two-round total of 151. Drew Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) shot a 75 in the first round and was forced to withdraw from the event because of the flu.
“I’m really proud of our players to shoot as well as they did in the second round after we lost Drew,” said Seminole Head Coach Trey Jones. “This is a good test for our players because you could lose a player to illness at during any event and this will help prepare them in case it ever happens in the future. The played the entire second round knowing that all of their scores were going to count and they played well.”
