Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State women’s tennis player Anca Dumitrescu has been ranked No. 35 in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Singles Rankings. The junior is the only Seminole to appear in the preseason singles poll.
Dumitrescu is coming off a strong season in 2001-2002 and was rewarded for her performance with a high preseason ranking. The Bucharest, Romania native went 22-12 last season and will play the No. 1 position for the Seminoles this year.
“Anca can do anything with the ball and has all the tools necessary to be top 10 in the country,” said head coach Lise Gregory. “She won a lot of big matches for us last year and I expect her to lead the team again this year.”
The Atlantic Coast Conference was well represented with 17 players in the women’s top 100.
The Seminoles open the 2002 fall season with the Lady Seminole Classic in Tallahassee on Sept. 27-29 held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The first of three national championship tournaments for the 2002-03 season takes place next month with the Rivera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Oct. 10-13.
Preseason team rankings will be released in January.
