TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Leyla Erkan posted two singles wins today in the consolation bracket at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
After dropping her first match to No.25 Anna Bartenstein from Miami 6-1, 6-1, Erkan surged back and defeated Gen Lorberges from Central Florida 6-3, 6-2 in her first match of the day. In her second, she moved on to beat Kate Parker from South Florida at 6-3, 6-2. Tomorrow she will Florida International’s Karyn Guttormsen at 10:30 a.m.
“Leyla did a great job today winning her back to back singles matches.” Head coach Jenn Hyde said. “She is working very hard on finding her groove and playing her game and sticking with it. There is no doubt that she got better today, and I’m excited to see how she handles the next round of competition as she moves through the tournament.”
“Our doubles pairing of Carolina and Ruth were very impressive today as they took down a Gator team to advance to the semi-finals.” Hyde stated.
Sunday will feature one round of doubles with two rounds of singles to follow and will begin at 9 a.m. Championship Monday will have the main and consolation finals in both doubles and singles. The start time is yet to be determined.
The singles and doubles champions from the event will secure automatic berths into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. There are at-large bids that could be made as well.
