Senior guard Antwuan Dixon scored 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field to lead the Gold team to a 71-68 victory over the Garnet squad in Florida State’s annual intra-squad scrimmage at the Leon County Civic Center. Dixon was on fire in the first half as he made three of four 3-point shot attempts and eight of ten shots overall.
Dixon helped the Gold bolt to an early lead with his 19 first half points as his team led by as many as 10 points with five minutes elapsed in the first half. Dixon scored seven consecutive points on a dunk, a 3-pointer and a mid-range jump shot within a 56 second span to send the Gold on what seemed to be its way. He later added five consecutive points on a 3-point shot and a jumper to put the Gold team up, 31-28, with 6:26 remaining in the first half.
The Garnet squad, led by Monte Cummings’ 10 first half points, did not back down and surged back to a trail by on seven, 54-47, at halftime.
Cummings scored 21 points during the game on an array of twisting and turning jump shots and two key 3-pointers to lead the Garnet squad. Cummings was nine-of-14 from the field, grabbed four rebounds and added three assists to lead three of his Garnet teammates in double-figure scoring.
The Gold team held the lead for the most of the second half until a Cummings jumper put the Garnet up 66-64 with 6:14 remaining. A basket by junior Nigel Dixon (14 points and five rebounds), a dunk by Antwuan Dixon and a 3-pointer by sophomore Michael Joiner (13 points and three rebounds) led the Gold on a 7-2 run to close of the game and take the victory.
Cummings paced the Garnet team and was followed by freshman Anthony Richardson’s 11 points and sophomore J.D. Bracy’s 10 points. Junior Mike Mathews led the Garnet with a game -high six rebounds. Senior guard Delvon Arrington had seven points and six assists.
