Tallahassee, FL –
The Florida State Athletics Department teamed with Ounce of Prevention and South Side Schools in Leon County to launch a program to promote reading and literacy in Leon County School today. The athletics department purchased a number of books titled “Let’s Go `Noles”, which are designed to promote reading. FSU basketball coach Leonard Hamilton, FSU cheerleaders, Cimarron mascot were on hand to present the first shipment of books to the principal at Caroline Brevard Elementary School at 9:00 a.m. today.

“We know what a powerful positive influence athletics can be for our young people and we felt this was an exceptional way to tie in the need for all students to excel academically,” said Associate Athletic Director Pam Overton who heads FSU’s Athletics Student Services and Life Skills programs. “Our FSU student-athletes do so much in terms of community service every year and are more than willing to help especially when it comes to the children. Our hope is that this material will help the teachers and administrators to engage our students in reading.”

Florida State student-athletes totalled over 4,500 hours of community service work last year alone.
