UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 18-ranked Florida State men’s tennis team earned a grueling 4-3 victory against No. 21 Oklahoma State to advance to the Round of 16 in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Senior Chris Cloer clinched the match for FSU with a three set victory against Anton Bobytskyi 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.
“It was a battle with a lot of close matches,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “We won a lot of close matches and beat a really good team today.”
The Seminoles started quickly in doubles and pulled out a pair of wins to take the point. Senior Chris Cloer and junior Vahid Mirzadeh dispatched Aleksey Bessonov and Mikhail Trukshanin 8-4 on court three and 47th-ranked seniors Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut defeated the Cowboys Igor Sobolta and Anton Bobytskyi 8-4 on court two to clinch the point.
“We had a slow start in doubles and then we started dominating,” Hultquist said. “I like how we played at two and three today to get the point.”
It looked like it would be an easy day as the Garnet and Gold took the first two singles matches beginning with the No. 29-ranked Bowles earning a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Trukshanin on court two. The Tampa, Fla., native earned his sixth straight singles victory by winning his third tiebreaker win in his last four sets. FSU then got a huge victory when No. 29-ranked Aubone upset fifth-ranked Nedovyesov in three sets 7-6(1), 3-6, 6-3 on court one. On serve in the third set at 4-3, Aubone broke Nedovyesov and went on to win the match.
“We feel like Jean-Yves is one of the best players in the country and I thought he played his best match of season,” Hultquist said. “His opponent is certainly one of the best in the country and Jean-Yves got the big win.”
The Cowboys came back to make the score 3-1 with Bessonov’s three set victory over Mrizadeh on court four 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-1. OSU took home another three set win on court three with Byrnes upsetting No. 79 Sykut 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-3. The score became knotted at three on court six with Sobolta defeating Bailey 6-4, 6-3.
The match came down to court number five where Cloer and Bobytskyi split the first two sets. Bobytskyi won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(5) and Cloer won the second 6-2. In the third set Cloer was up 4-3 and won the last two games to clinch the match for the Seminoles.
“Chris had a lead in the first set and squandered it, but came back in the second and third,” Hultquist said. “He’s always been pretty good in pressure situations and today was no exception. He had to play patient and he made some great plays today.”
The Indoor Championships will continue on Thursday, February 13, in Chicago, Ill. Before Florida State travels to Illinois, they have one more home match on Sunday, February 8, against South Alabama. For live results and a match recap log onto www.seminoles.com.
