Auburn And Virginia Tied For Lead At ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Challenge

Oct. 29, 2004

DESTIN, Fla. –
Auburn and Virginia are tied for the team lead and Auburn’s Diana Ramage and Wake Forest’s Laura Crawford are tied for the individual lead after the first round of the Fifth Annual Chrysler ACC/SEC Challenge at the Raven Course at Sandestin Beach and Golf Resort. Duke is looking to become the first repeat winner of the event and tie Auburn for the most teams in tournament history. Auburn won the team title in both 2000 and 2002. Virginia is looking to earn its first ever ACC/SEC tournament championship.

Auburn and Virginia are tied with identical scores of 292. The Cavaliers have three players in the top 10 (Rachel Smith, Leah Wigger and Lauren Mielbrecht). Duke’s Liz Janangelo, the defending individual medalist, finished with a three over par score of 74. She finished third among the five Blue Devils in the event.

Ramage won medalist honors at the 2002 ACC/SEC Challenge with a near-record 214 tournament score. She played four holes at par or better including a two on the par three fourth hole and a three on the par four 13th hole. Ramage was over par only two holes during the afternoon round.

Crawford shot her one-under par 70 as she played four of the 18 holes during the round under par. She played the front and back nines withy identical scores of 35 and missed shooting a 68 after finishing the round with a two-over par six on the 18th hole. Crawford played only two rounds over par for the entire first round.

Florida State, the host team, is in ninth place. The Seminoles are led by Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) who shot a team-leading 72. She is in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings. Her one-over par score ranks as her best of the fall season for the junior who has led Florida State to the past two NCAA Tournaments. Sophomore Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) shot a 74. It marked the fourth consecutive tournament she has shot a 74 in the first round. Burch is tied for 18th in the individual standings.

Saturday’s second round, a shotgun start, begins at 8 a.m. CST. The final round of 18 holes, also a shotgun start, starts Sunday at 8 a.m.
