Auburn Captures 2002 Chrysler ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Callenge; Auburn’s Diana Ramage Wins Individual Title

Sept. 29, 2002

DESTIN, Fla. –
Auburn posted the best team score of the final round to earn a come-from-behind team victory at the 2002 Chrysler ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Challenge at the Raven Course at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Tigers posted a 296 to surpass defending national champion Duke on the final day of competition to outdistance the Blue Devils by six strokes. It marked the second time in three years Auburn had competed in the event and the second time it has claimed the team championship.

Auburn was led by Diana Ramage, who shot a three-round total of 214 to claim individual medallist honors. Ramage shot a one-over par score of 214 to win the individual championship. Despite shooting her lowest score of the tournament in the final round (73), she defeated Furman’s Brandi Jackson and Duke’s Elizabeth Janangelo by three strokes.

“I’m very proud of how our players performed this week,” said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. “There was nothing flashy about our victory – we put in a real blue collar effort to win this tournament. We worked hard for three full days to gain the team win.”

In finishing second, Duke posted its highest team round of the tournament, 303, and fell to second place after leading the team standings after the second round.

Florida finished third with Jeanne Cho leading the way for the Gators. Cho finished in a tie for fourth place. She was followed by Andrea Vander Lende who finished in a tie foe seventh place.

Florida State posting its highest ever finish in the event, fourth place. Junior Alison Curdt led the Seminoles with a career-best finish of tied for 12th. Junior Carrie Sordel finished tied for 31st place while senior Kristin Tamulis finished in a tie for 34th place.

The Southeastern Conference won the Commissioner’s Cup for the third consecutive season. The conference battle was the closest in event history with only 10 strokes separating the women’s golf super-powers.
