2003 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament Opening Rounds
Auburn 1, Oklahoma State 0 (Box Score)
“First, I really have to give Oklahoma State a lot of credit. They are an unbelievable team and they never quit. For us to have scored three minutes in to the game and that be the deciding goal is really amazing and I think is a testament to our defense. All year long we have won games with our defense and they held true tonight to get us this victory.
“A lot of times I thought we were hanging on but our defense is just so organized and so experienced. We have Erin Hinson and Sandy Carnes who are our senior captains and our center back and they have organized that back line to where we really never gave Oklahoma State a threatening look. The crossbar hit late in the game was probably their but chance but it wasn’t a clean look that they had at the ball. Our defense was great in keeping them in front. Our offense continued to attack especially in the second half. We did a better job of continuing to attack a trying create some chances so the defense could get a little bit of a breather.
“It was a great goal — it was all three forwards combining on the goal and that’s when we are successful. We have been really, really successful when we get all three forwards on the ball. They just did a great job of combining — (Sarah) Steinman playing it to (Chrissy) Culver and playing it perfectly to Jac (Schwarz). Those are our three starting forwards for a reason.
“We are just happy to be playing on Sunday. I think either team is going to be a tough test for us obviously. Florida State beat us last year and we know how good they are finishing second in the ACC. Dartmouth, winning the Ivy league, we beat them earlier in the season but it is a different team and it is always tough to try and beat a team twice in one season. Either way it is going to be a big test for us.”
“I first just want to give a lot of credit to Auburn for coming out and playing a good game. They played well and they certainly took it to us at the start of the game. They played with more intensity than we did at the start of the game. They were rewarded for that.
“They started the game with a lot more energy than we did. That was the difference in the game, I felt. Obviously, we had some chances and they had other chances. The difference was early in the game they was probably a little more ready to play than we were.
“It’s been a great season. This game doesn’t change that. For our program, we set a new record for wins and obviously winning the Big 12 Championship Tournament. We are only the third conference to do that (win the regular season and the tournament). We made it to the NCAA’s — it’s the first time we have done that. We achieved a lot of milestones that we had never gone near before. We had a great season”
