Auburn Stays Alive, Edges Liberty 3-2

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Todd Faulker scored the winning run from second base on an error in the top of the ninth then second-seeded Auburn survived a bases loaded rally in the bottom half of the inning as the Tigers eliminated sixth-seeded Liberty 3-2 at the NCAA Atlantic II baseball regional in Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee.

With the game tied at two, Faulkner led off the final frame with a single to center field and moved to second on a sacrafice bunt by Hayden Gliemmo. After Jamie Kersh flied out to right field, Chan Wandell hit a grounder to third that went thorugh the legs of Flames third baseman Jason Benham, allowing Fulkner to score the winning run for Auburn (44-17).

Liberty loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with one out. Tim Strong attempted to lay down a squeeze bunt but Tiger reliever Colter Bean threw home for a force out. Benham then bounced into a force play to end the game and the season for the Flames. Liberty, champions of the Big South Conference, finished the year with a 32-29 record.

Auburn advances to a 3:00 p.m. game on Saturday against the loser of tonight’s game between Rutgers and Oklahoma.
