TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State’s Jessica Balbuena of the Lady Seminole tennis team, added a tournament championship to her list of 1999 summer accomplishments. Balbuena defeated the top two seeds in the ITA’s Arlington, Texas Summer Circuit Tournament en route to winning the tournament’s championship. The ITA tournament was held July 27th through July 30th.
Balbuena, seeded fourth, defeated the No. 1 seed, Rebekah Forney from the University of Texas, in the semifinals. In the finals, Balbuena met the University of Tennessee’s No. 1 player and the country’s 78th-ranked player, Allison Ojeda. Balbuena took the first set 6-4, before Ojeda grabbed the second set 6-1. Balbuena then won the deciding set 6-3 to clinch the championship.
Balbuena, a sophomore from Woodlands, Texas, won 27 matches her freshman year at Florida State. Her 27 wins gave her the fourth winningest season in school history. Balbuena was one of three freshmen who started for FSU in the spring. The team finished 21-7 and was ranked 23rd in the nation. FSU’s 21 wins in 1999 gave the Lady Seminoles their fourth highest win total in the teams 20-year history.
