TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Centerfielder Brian Cox drove in three runs on two hits to lead No. 21 Florida State to a 13-4 victory over UNC Greensboro at Dick Howser Stadium.
Cox belted an RBI-single to centerfield with two outs to start a six-run rally in the first inning. First baseman Kevin Cash followed with a basehit to knock in two more runs. Rightfielder Matt Diaz and designated hitter Terry Henderson were both hit by a pitch to reach base and shortstop Brett Groves ripped a single to rightfield to drive the runners home and give FSU a 6-0 lead in the first inning.
Right-hander John Bentley (3-0) surrendered three runs and scattered seven hits as he struck out a season-high six batters to record his third win of the season. Only two of Bentley’s runs were earned in the five-inning outing.
Catcher Jeremy Salazar extended his career-high hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI-single in the fourth inning. Leftfielder Karl Jernigan drove in two runs on two hits and scored three runs as his eight-game hitting streak continued.
UNC Greensboro right-hander Rhett Woehrle (1-1) gave up six runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning in the loss for the Spartans. UNCG leftfielder Linwood Davis drove in two runs on three hits and centerfielder Kenny Vawter was 2-for-2 on the day.
