MINNEAPOLIS, Minn – Right-hander Nick Stocks struck out seven
batters and held Minnesota (6-6) to two runs on five hits as he led No.
1 Florida State (15-3) to a 9-5 victory in front of 6,293 fans at the

Second baseman Marshall McDougall led FSU (15-3) with three
hits, while right fielder Matt Diaz and catcher Jeremiah Klosterman each
had a pair of hits.
Minnesota right-hander Brad Pautz (0-1) surrendered seven runs
on nine hits in five innings pitched in the loss. Pautz struck out
seven batters and walked one.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a
two-run single by designated-hitter John Halliday. The Golden Gophers
cut it to a one-run ballgame in the second inning as first baseman Aron
Amundson singled and scored on a basehit by second baseman Matt
Florida State ripped three consecutive basehits to start the
third inning. Centerfielder Chris Smith singled and was driven home by
right fielder Matt Diaz’ hit up the middle. Second baseman Marshall
McDougall, who also reached on a single to centerfield, was knocked in
on a ground ball out hit by third baseman Sam Scott as FSU took a 4-1
The Seminoles added a pair of runs in the fourth inning as first
baseman Kevin Cash and catcher Jeremiah Klosterman led off with
back-to-back singles. Shortstop Brett Groves’ ground ball out forced
Cash home, while Klosterman scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith.
Diaz belted a solo home run, his fifth of the year, to left
field in the fifth inning increasing FSU’s lead to 7-1. Klosterman
doubled and scored on a Minnesota throwing error on a ball hit by
Groves. McDougall drove in Groves on a double to left field to make the
Minnesota scored a run in both the seventh and eighth, and a
pair of runs in the ninth inning to attempt a come back, but only cut
FSU’s lead to 9-5.
