TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Left-hander Wes Crawford hurled a complete-game shutout as he led No. 21 Florida State (14-7) to a 9-0 victory over North Carolina State (10-5) in the first ACC matchup of the season for both teams.
Crawford (3-0) held North Carolina State hitless for 6 2/3 innings before Wolfpack catcher Brad Piercy slapped a basehit to right field. Crawford held NC State to three hits and struck out four batters in the outing.
FSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Brooks Badeaux reached base on a walk and scored on a wild pitch by Wolfpack pitcher Bubba Scarce. Rightfielder Matt Diaz gave the Seminoles another run in the second inning with a solo home run to centerfield. Diaz leads FSU with five home runs this season.
A single to centerfielder by shortstop Brett Groves knocked in Diaz in the fourth inning as the Seminoles increased their lead to 3-0. Third baseman Jose Zabala added another run after reaching on an error and scoring on a double steal attempt to end the fifth inning. Kevin Cash was picked off on the double steal attempt.
NC State’s Scarce (3-1) gave up four runs on five hits and five walks as he took the loss in the seven-inning outing. Scarce struck out four batters.
The Seminoles scored five runs on four hits in the eighth inning off Wolfpack relievers. Centerfielder Brian Cox, DH Terry Henderson and Groves each doubled in the inning. Groves’ double knocked in two runs for FSU. He led the Seminoles with two hits and three RBI on the night.
Tonight’s shutout was Florida State’s fourth of the season. Catcher Jeremy Salazar extended his hitting streak to 13 games, while leftfielder Karl Jernigan’s streak also continued at nine games.
