Baseball Clinches ACC Title with 9-3 Win over Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –No. 4 Florida State (41-10, 17-2 ACC)
clinched their second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference regular
season championship with a 9-3 victory over Maryland (21-24-1, 6-12).
It is the third ACC regular season title (’96) for the Seminoles since
joining the league in 1992.

RHP Jon McDonald (8-2) worked 5 2/3 inning for the victory,
giving up three (two earned) runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Chris Chavez, Mike DiBlasi and Chris Whidden combined on the final 3 1/3
innings of scoreless relief.

In the loss, UM LHP Tom Curtiss (2-5) went 6 2/3 innings, gave
up seven earned runs on eight hits and struck out 10.

FSU put three runs on the board in the top of the third inning
to take the early lead. Center fielder Karl Jernigan started things off
with a walk and scored the game’s first run when shortstop Brett Groves
tripled to right field. Left fielder Mike Futrell’s perfectly executed
base-hit bunt down the first base line plated Groves. Futrell would be
the third Seminole to score after back-to-back singles by second baseman
Marshall McDougall and right fielder Matt Diaz.

Maryland picked up single runs in the bottom of the third,
fourth and fifth innings. In the third, third baseman Mike D’Archangelo
sinlged, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored when FSU first
baseman John Halliday’s toss back to McDonald after a slow-rolling
grounder was in the dirt. The Terps then made it 3-2 when designated
hitter Craig Munroe doubled and scored on first baseman Chuck Easter’s
double to right. Munroe was also responsible for the Terps’ run in the
fifth when he singled up the middle to score left filder Eric Beer.

McDougall knocked in his 67th run of the year in the top of the
fifth to stay one behind teammate Matt Diaz in the ACC RBI race. Groves
walked and stole second before McDougall ripped a ground-rule double to
left for the RBI.

Jernigan’s started another three-run inning for the Seminoles in
the seventh, with a solo home run (5) to center . FSU got the next two
runs without a hit. McDougall and Diaz walked and third baseman Kevin
Cash was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Catcher Jeremiah Klosterman
walked and pinch-hitter John-Ford Griffin was hit by a pitch as
McDougall and Diaz scored.

McDougall and Diaz added another RBI apiece in the bottom of the
eighth to give FSU the final margin of 9-3.

McDougall went 3-for-4 on the night with two doubles, two runs
and two RBI. Groves also had a good night at the plate, going 2-for-3
with a triple, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
