TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 1 Florida State struck early with five runs
in the first inning capped off by a three-run homer by first baseman Kevin
Cash as the Seminoles defeated No. 7 Florida, 12-3, in front of 4,612 fans
at Dick Howser Stadium.
Left fielder Chris Smith drove in two runs on three hits, including
a two-run double in the third inning, in his first appearance as FSU’s leadoff hitter.
Right-hander Nick Stocks (3-0) struck out eight batters in six-plus
innings as he held the Gators to three runs on six hits. FSU relievers Chris Ginn, Chris Whidden and Mike DiBlasi held Florida scoreless and combined for six strikeouts.
The Seminoles (12-1) chased freshman right-hander Jay Belflower (0-1) in just one-plus innings. Belflower gave up five runs on four hits
and two walks. He struck out two batters in the outing.
Florida (3-3) broke up the shutout in the sixth inning with two solo home runs by right fielder Greg Catalanotte and left fielder Pete Nystrom.
Third baseman Marshall McDougall hit his fifth home run of the season in sixth inning to knock in another three runs for FSU and increase
the Seminoles lead to 11-2.
The Gators’ Mark Ellis doubled and scored in the seventh inning on
a basehit by first baseman Jason Dill to make the score 11-3.
Pinch-hitter Bobby Spano reached on an error and scored on a ground
ball by centerfielder Karl Jernigan for FSU’s final run.
FSU’s 12 runs were the most scored by a Seminole team against Florida in the last 48 meetings.
Florida State and Florida will return to action next week with a two-game series in Gainesville. The first game will be on Saturday, February 27th at 1:00 p.m., and the final game of the four-game rivalry will be on Sunday, February 28th at 1:30 p.m.
