Feb. 26, 1998

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Devil Rays used a five-run eighth
inning in a 6-3 come-from-behind victory in the organization’s first-ever spring
training game.

Third baseman Scott McClain ripped a double off FSU pitcher Jason Hubbard to tie
the score at 3-3 in the eighth inning. McClain then scored after a base hit by
Luis Polonia and a throwing error by Hubbard for the game-winning run. The
Devil Rays added two more runs on an RBI-double by first baseman Steve Cox and a
sacrifice fly by designated Greg Blosser.

Catcher Mike DeFelice’s triple to centerfield off lefthander Zach Diaz drove in
rightfielder Dave Martinez to give the Devils Rays a 1-0 lead in the second
inning.

The Seminoles tied the score at 1-1 as second baseman Brooks Badeaux belted a
home run over the right field wall. Four consecutive basehits off Devil Rays’
pitcher Scott Lewis gave Florida State a 3-1 advantage in the seventh inning.
Designated hitter Henry Mayfield started the rally and center fielder Karl
Jernigan and rightfielder Matt Diaz followed with basehits. Shortstop Brett
Groves belted a basehit to leftfield to score Mayfield and Badeaux was hit by a
pitch on the next at bat to drive in Jernigan.

Florida State pitchers held the Devils Rays to three hits before the eighth
inning. Zach Diaz and Chris Ginn each struck out two batters in their
appearances.
