TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Centerfielder Brian Cox drove in three runs on two hits
as he led No. 8 Florida State (26-7) to a 7-5 win over Florida Atlantic at
Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles have extended their winning streak to
Cox contributed a two-run double in the first inning as FSU jumped out to
a 3-0 lead. Rightfielder Matt Diaz drove in two runs with a pair of
sacrifice flies and also extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a
single in the third inning.
Righthander John Bentley held Florida Atlantic to four runs on seven hits
in six innings in his first appearance in three weeks since suffering a
shoulder injury. Bentley allowed just one run on three hits through the
first five innings but gave up three runs on four hits in the sixth inning.
FAU centerfielder Brian Dodge helped the Owls’ cause with an RBI-double in
Catcher Jeremy Salazar belted a solo home run in the eighth inning to give
the Seminoles an insurance run and a 7-5 lead.
Left-hander Carmen Cali (23-12) gave up six runs on six hits and struck
out two batters in six innings of work in the loss for Florida Atlantic.
Right-hander Scott Proctor earned his third save as he retired the final
two batters for the Seminoles.
First baseman John-Edward Raffo hit a solo home run in the third inning
for the Owls.
Second baseman Brooks Badeaux was 2-for-4 with a triple in the first
inning. Shortstop Brett Groves’ 16-game hitting streak ended today with an
