TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Designated-hitter John-Ford Griffin singled
and scored the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice by rightfielder
Matt Diaz in the 10th inning as No. 1 Florida State pulled out a 5-4
victory over No. 3 North Carolina in front of 3,604 fans at Dick Howser
The Seminoles (28-3, 8-0 ACC) extended their winning streak to
14 games, while the Tar Heels (22-4, 2-3 ACC) dropped their second
Right-hander Chris Chavez (2-2) earned the win by striking out
one in a scoreless inning of relief in the 10th. Tar Heel reliever
Derrick DePriest (1-2) gave up two runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings in
the loss for North Carolina.
Right-hander Nick Stocks struck out 10 batters in eight innings
of a no-decision. Stocks surrended four runs on nine hits and two
walks. He has fanned 34 batters in his last three starts.
Tar Heel left-hander Mike Bynum held the Seminoles scoreless for
five innings after surrendering three runs in the first inning in a
no-decision. Bynum scattered eight hits and struck out nine batters in
the six-inning outing.
Second baseman Marshall McDougall blasted a solo home run over
the right field screen to give FSU a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
First baseman John Halliday, third baseman Kevin Cash and left fielder
Mike Futrell belted three consecutive doubles to add a pair of runs and
give the Seminoles a 3-0 advantage.
The Tar Heels cut it to a one-run game with a two-run single by
first baseman Ryan Blake in the second inning.
After Stocks loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning,
he retired the side in order. Stocks sat down 10 consecutive batters
before surrending a solo home run to third baseman Ryan Earey as UNC
tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning.
North Carolina took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning after
centerfielder Jarrett Shearin reached on a basehit and scored on a bloop
single by second baseman Chris LaMarsh.
Diaz singled and tied the game on a basehit by Cash in the ninth
to send the game into extra innings. First baseman Ryan Barthemely went
3-for-4 on the night and Griffin and catcher Jeremiah Klosterman each
recorded a pair of hits.
