GAINESVILLE, Fla – No. 6 Florida (5-3) used two solo home runs by first baseman Jason Dill and right fielder Greg Catalanotte in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and defeat No. 1 Florida State (12-2), 4-2, in front of 5,657 fans at McKethan Stadium.
Right-hander Matt McClendon (2-0) hurled a complete-game as he held the Seminoles to two runs on eight hits. He struck out four batters and walked two in the outing.
Right-hander Chris Chavez (1-2) gave up three runs on two hits in relief of FSU starter Jon McDonald. Chavez struck out two and walked a pair in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
Gator leftfielder Pete Nystrom singled to centerfielder, advanced on two wild pitches by McDonald and scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Kurt Keene.
The Seminoles tied the score in the eighth inning as left fielder Chris Smith singled and came home on a basehit by right fielder Matt Diaz.
Florida State scored its final run as first baseman Kevin Cash singled and came home on a double by pinch-hitter John-Ford Griffin.
McDonald surrendered one run on five hits in 6.1 innings of a no-decision. He struck out five and walked one in the outing.
