CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Rigthfielder Matt Diaz drove in one run on a career-high four hits as No. 12 Florida State (33-12, 11-2 ACC) defeated North Carolina (23-15, 7-7 ACC), 4-3, in front of 1,374 fans at Boshamer Stadium.
Right-hander Chris Chavez (5-2) struck out eight batters and held the Tar Heels to one run on four hits in six-plus innings as he earned the win for FSU.
Reliever Scott Proctor retired UNC shortstop Brian Roberts for the final out of the ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the season.
Florida State broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning. Catcher Jeremy Salazar reached base on a fielders choice and came home on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Terry Henderson doubled and scored on a basehit to leftfield by Matt Diaz.
North Carolina cut FSUs lead to 2-1 as designated hitter Chris LaMarsh drove in shortstop Brian Roberts with a single to leftfield.
Centerfielder Brian Cox gave the Seminoles an insurance run in the eighth inning with a solo home run to leftfield. Matt Diaz doubled and scored on a ground ball out by second baseman Brooks Badeaux to give FSU a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning.
Tar Heel first baseman Jay Madeira belted a solo home run to leftfield off Seminole reliever Zach Diaz to cut FSUs lead to 4-3, before Proctor relieved Diaz.
Right-hander Kyle Snyder (3-6) gave up three runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings of work in the loss for UNC. Snyder struck out five batters in the outing.
