Baseball Holds on to Top Spot in National Polls

March 22, 1999

DURHAM, N.C. – Continuing an impressive display of dominant pitching,
timely hitting and solid defense, Florida State picked up a sweep on the
road in its conference and remained atop Baseball America’s Top 25
college rankings for the fifth time in six weeks.

The Seminoles swept North Carolina State, formerly ranked No. 24, in
Atlantic Coast Conference play. Next weekend, they play host to No. 3
North Carolina, which shook off a Friday loss to No. 24 Wake Forest to
win its initial ACC series.

Auburn is sandwiched between the ACC rivals at No. 2. That ties the
Tigers’ highest ranking ever in the poll, which happened last in the May
15, 1995 rankings.

Two new teams entered the poll–Oral Roberts at No. 23, its first
ranking since re-entering Division I in 1995, and Florida Atlantic at
No. 22. It’s the first time the Owls have been in the poll.

Rankings are through games of March 21 and determined by the staff of
Baseball America.
