Baseball Hosts Jacksonville in Final Non-Conference Game

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  Florida State (31-18) will host Jacksonville (27-20) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium in the final non-conference game of the year for the Seminoles. Senior Will Zirzow (1-1, 3.38 ERA) will take the hill for the Noles, making his third career start. Jacksonville will counter with Mike Cassala (0-2, 6.57 ERA).

Both of Cassala’s losses this season have come against Florida State. In Jacksonville on February 28, Florida State trailed 3-0 early and 5-3 late before rallying for three runs in the seventh inning to win 6-5. Drew Carlton earned his first career save in the game, pitching a perfect eighth and ninth innings.

On March 21 in Tallahassee, Jacksonville scored seven runs in the first inning before the Seminoles chipped away at the lead for much of the game. Entering the ninth inning down 9-7, Cal Raleigh homered to lead off the inning, and J.C. Flowers hit a two-run walk-off single to end the inning and give FSU the 10-9 win. Carlton earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Seminoles enter a season-high 13 games over .500 after sweeping Pacific in four games over weekend. A Dylan Busby eighth-inning home run was the game-winner in Friday night’s 9-8 win. On Saturday, Tyler Holton reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season and the FSU offense exploded for a season-high 18 runs and 17 hits in the 18-5 win.

FSU won the final two games of the series 5-3, including Sunday’s series finale. Pacific loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning, but Alec Byrd earned the first save of his career by forcing a pop up and a double play to end the game.
