TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A veteran-laden team with younger talent expected to contribute immediately, the 2017 Florida State baseball team will open the season ranked in the Top 10 by a trio of outlets. D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game each have the Seminoles beginning the season as the third-best team in the country, while Collegiate Baseball has the Noles ranked No. 9.
Additionally, a pair of Seminole juniors, shortstop Taylor Walls and infielder Dylan Busby, were named preseason First Team All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball. Walls and sophomore catcher Cal Raleigh are preseason Third Team All-Americans from Perfect Game.
Walls, Busby, and Raleigh will spearhead a lineup that returns six of eight regular position players from a season ago and all three pitchers that started the Super Regional in 2016. With the addition of infielder Drew Mendoza, the highest-rated freshman in the country, Florida State has as much depth at the plate as any team in the country.
Among the teams ranked by D1Baseball.com in the preseason poll, Florida State will face No. 2 Florida, No. 6 NC State, No. 9 North Carolina, No. 12 Louisville, No. 15 Clemson, No. 17 Virginia and No. 21 Miami for three games each.
The 2017 season will kick-off with the annual Leadoff Dinner February 16 at the Tallahassee Automobile Museum, followed by Opening Day on February 17 at 4:00 p.m. against VCU at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee.
