TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Right fielder Matt Diaz belted three home runs and recorded six RBI as No. 1 Florida State (19-3, 3-0 ACC) defeated Virginia, 11-3, to complete a three-game conference sweep in front 1,571 fans at Dick Howser Stadium.
Right-hander Blair Varnes (5-0) earned his fifth win of the year as he held the Cavaliers to one run on five hits. Varnes struck out five batters in six innings pitched.
Left fielder Kevin Cash ripped a career-high four hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning. Diaz’ home runs were each two-run shots in the first, third and fourth innings.
Catcher Jeremiah Klosterman joined FSU’s power surge with a two-run homer in the fifth. Klosterman drove in three runs on two hits on the day.
Virginia right-hander Kevin Shrout (2-3) surrendered five runs on five hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings pitched in the loss. Virginia falls to 8-12 and 0-3 in the ACC. Right fielder Julian Gonzalez ripped a two-run homer in the eighth inning for the Cavaliers. Second baseman Marshall McDougall also extended his hitting streak to 13 games with three basehits in the game.
