TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida State (3-0) completed a three-game
season opening sweep of Western Kentucky (0-3) with a 6-1 Sunday victory
in a light rain at Dick Howser Stadium. FSU did all its scoring on home
runs while former Tallahassee Community College pitcher Mike Ziegler
picked up his first win on the mound as a Seminole.
Junior third baseman Pichi Balet started a five run second
inning for the Seminoles with a solo home run to left. Designated hitter
John-Ford Griffin knocked in the other four runs with a grand slam over
the right field fence. The homer scored right fielder Chris Smith,
catcher Blair MCCaleb and shortstop Brett Groves.
Third baseman Justin Herrguth scored Western Kentucky’s lone run
in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Matt Fox.
The five run second inning would be plenty of cushion for
Ziegler, who got the victory in his first FSU start. Ziegler gave up
just one run in six innings of work, allowing four hits and one walk
while striking out six.
Brian Houdek took the the loss for the Hilltoppers after
surrendering five runs on eight hits in five innings.
FSU left fielder Mike Futrell added a solo home run in the
bottom of the eighth inning to finish the scoring.
Mike DiBlasi, Nick Whidden and Karl Jernigan worked one inning
of scoreless relief apiece to secure the win.
