Baseball to Host Troy State

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The Florida State Seminole baseball team, who is ranked #1 by Baseball America, will host a series with Troy State this weekend, February 12-14. The Seminoles are 6-0 after a three game sweep of the Arizona State Sun Devils and a sweep of the series with UNC-Asheville.

Blair Varnes will start the series on the mound for the Seminoles with a 1-0 record, eight strikeouts and a 3.65 ERA after 12.1 innings pitched. John McDonald is second in the rotation with a 1-0 record, a .73 ERA and has 20 strikeouts. Nick Stocks rounds out the pitching rotation for this weekend as he is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA and ten strikeouts. Third baseman Marshall McDougall leads the starters with a .545 batting average, has had nine RBIs and is riding a five game hitting streak. Chris Hart leads the team wth a .750 batting average and Karl Jernigan leads the team in steals. The Seminoles are batting .348 as a team and have hit 10 home runs while averaging 9.67 runs per game.

Florida State leads the series with Troy State 11-2 beginning in 1948. FSU defeated the Trojans in the 1995 NCAA Regional, 18-3, in their last meeting. Right-hander Jason Russ will start the pitching for the Trojans with Cale Wright pitching on Saturday and Willie Wright rounding out the rotation on Sunday. The Seminoles start play on Friday at 3:30 with games on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00. The games will be broadcast on the Seminole Sports Network WNLS 1270 AM.
