GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State senior righthander Chris Chavez
was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for his
efforts in Sunday’s win over Georgia Tech.
Chavez, making his first start of the season, struck out a
career-high 13 Yellow Jacket batters in 8 2/3 innings of work. He gave
up two earned runs on only two hits and walked four in FSU’s 4-2
victory, allowing just two of his 26 outs to leave the infield. Chavez,
6-4 with a 2.37 ERA, came into the game ranked sixth nationally in
strikeouts per nine innings. His previous career-best strikeout total
of 11 came in a 1998 no-hitter against Charleston Southern and he ranks
fifth all-time in career strikeouts at FSU with 365.
