TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) — Florida State, which has won its first three games by an average of 18.7 points, plays host to Detroit Mercy in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee. The Seminoles enter Sunday’s game with a 3-0 record for the first time since first time since the start of the 2013-14 season and for the 10th time under Seminole head coach Leonard Hamilton. Florida State won its first 10 games of the 2003-04 season under Hamilton to set the program record for consecutive wins to open a season. Florida State scored 100 points in its last game – a victory over Winthrop in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off in Tallahassee – the first time they have scored 100 points in a game this season. Following Sunday’s game against Detroit Mercy, the Seminoles will play in the semifinals of the 2016 NIT against Temple on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24) at 12:30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Championship/consolation game of the tournament will be he held on Friday at 12:30/3:00 at the Barclays Center.
FLORIDA STATE VS. DETROIT MERCY – A SERIES HISTORY
Florida State plays host to Detroit Mercy in the second round the NIT Season Tip-Off on November 20, 2016 at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee. The Seminoles hold a 1-0 series lead over the Titans with the only game of the series coming as an 84-83 win for Florida State on December 29, 1994. That game was also played in Tallahassee. Florida State was led in scoring in that win over Detroit Mercy by All-American Bob Sura who scored 28 points. Mickey Barrett, the Director of Operations for the Titans, was an assistant coach at Detroit Mercy when the two teams last met. Detroit Mercy marks the first team from the Horizon League the Seminoles will play since it faced Valparaiso in the second round of the 2016 NIT.
FLORIDA STATE’S HISTORY IN THE PRESEASON NIT
Florida State has participated in the preseason NIT twice in its basketball history – in 1992, the Seminoles finished fourth with a 2-2 record and a loss to Indiana in the semifinals of the event in Madison Square Garden. In 1992, the Seminoles gained wins over Sienna (89-80, Nov. 18) and Iowa State (109-86, Nov. 20) before falling to Indiana (81-78 in overtime, Nov. 25) in the semifinals and UCLA (86-83 in overtime, Nov. 27 in the consolation game. In 1997, the Seminoles defeated Loyola College of Maryland (89-72, Nov. 17), Utah State (66-55, Nov. 19) and Connecticut (67-60, Nov. 26) before falling to Kansas (73-58, Nov. 28) in the championship game. Florida State has a 6-3 overall record in its two preseason NIT appearances.
FLORIDA STATE LEADS THE ACC IN SCORING
Florida State, which averages 95.7 points scored in its first three games, enters Sunday’s game against Detroit Mercy as the top scoring team in the ACC. The Seminoles have scored 88, 99 and 100 points in their first three games for a total of 287 points. The Seminoles are one of three teams in the ACC averaging more than 90 points scored per game – Miami has played two games and is averaging 93.0 points scored per game and North Carolina is averaging 92.0 points scored per game.
HAMILTON NEEDS ONLY SIX WINS TO MOVE INTO NINTH FOR WINS IN ACC HISTORY
Seminole head coach Leonard Hamilton needs only six victories to become the ninth all-time winningest coach in ACC history. He enters Sunday’s game against Detroit Mercy with 259 wins in his career at Florida State and needs only six to surpass Frank McGuire of North and South Carolina who won 264 games during his career as a head coach in the ACC.

Sophomore Dwayne Bacon, who averages a team-leading 16.0 points per game in the Seminoles’ first three victories of the season, has been named to the Naismith and Wooden Award Watch Lists as the college basketball player of the year and the Julius Erving Award Watch List as college basketball’s top Small forward.
