Beach Noles Off To a Dominant Start At The CCSA Championship

EMERSON, Ga. – The No. 1-seeded Florida State beach volleyball team started off the CCSA Championship with two dominant 5-0 wins against UNCW and Tulane to begin pool play at the Lakepoint Sporting Community. The Noles only dropped one set as they featured two new pairings on court two and three.“Everyone’s lineups are strong top to bottom and pairs are moving around,” Florida State head coach Brooke Niles said.

“It is all about match-ups out here, and we are ready to be challenged. All year we have been put in tough situations.”

The Noles started the day off against ninth-seeded UNCW to begin pool play in Pool A. As all five courts got started at once, the Garnet and Gold jumped out to a fast start as they led on four of the five courts midway through the first set.

On court four, redshirt junior Katie Horton and freshman Francesca Goncalves captured the first of five straight-set victories for the Seminoles. They took down UNCW’s pair of Bella Borgiotti and Sydney Alvis, 21-10, 21-9. Florida State captured its second point of the morning on court two as juniors Vanessa Freire and Victoria Paranagua took down the Seahawks’ duo of Emily Corrigan and Maddy Kline, 21-9, 21-13. The Noles gathered their third point and the match clincher on court five with redshirt junior Hailey Luke and redshirt freshman Eva Torruella taking the win, 21-12, 21-10 against UNCW’s Halley Hunt/Raquel Rooney.

FSU finished off the Seahawks on courts three and one to round out the match with a 5-0 victory for the Noles. Senior Sierra Sanchez and sophomore Macy Jerger took down UNCW’s No. 3 duo of Sarah Kelly and Katie McCullough, 21-15, 21-18. On court one, graduate senior Leigh Andrew and sophomore Brooke Kuhlman rendered the Seahawks flightless as they too took down UNCW in straight sets, 21-17, 21-16.

The Seminoles picked up right where they finished as they defeated eighth-seeded Tulane in dominating fashion as well (5-0). Florida State won four of the five matches in straight sets.

Pairs two, four and five gathered the Noles first three points, just as they did in the previous match. Horton and Goncalves finished off their day with yet another impressive performance as they took down Tulane’s Anna Chin and Sarah Strasner 21-12, 21-16. This was the seventh win in a row for the pair and it extended the duo’s record to 12-1.

Luke and Torruella gathered the second point of the match on court five as they took down the Green Wave duo of Briana Correa and Cristina McAfee 21-19, 21-11. Paranagua and Freire clinched the match for the Garnet and Gold as they took down Lan Nguyen and Annie Surtz of Tulane on court two.
