Jan. 2, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – It was quite the year for Becky Edwards. First she collects her first gold medal after capturing the FIFA Youth World Cup with the United States, and then she was named a first team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Now the junior defender can add Scholar All-American to an already impressive resume. Edwards was named a first team Scholar All-American by the NSCAA, the first such honor of her collegiate career.

Edwards becomes the third Seminole in the last two years to be named a first team Scholar All-American by the NSCAA. In 2007, Katrin Schmidt and Kirsten van de Ven earned a spot on the first team.

The Downingtown, Pa., native appeared in 17 games for Florida State while making 12 starts in 2008. Edwards tallied three points (1 goal, 1 assist) in over 1,300 minutes of action. She played an integral role in the Seminole backline which gave up just 15 goals all season, the fewest allowed in school history. She was a member of the U.S. U-20 squad that won the gold medal at the 2008 FIFA Youth World Cup in Chile.

In the classroom, Edwards was named to the President’s List following the fall 2008 semester and is a four-time member of the Dean’s List at Florida State. Majoring in marketing, Edwards is a two-time member of both the All-ACC Academic team and ACC Honor Roll.

Katrin Schmidt, who graduated with a degree in International Affairs at Florida State following the fall 2008 semester, was named to the Scholar All-South Region third team.
