TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team kicked off the 2016 ITA Southeast Regional Championships presented by Oracle on Thursday as freshman Rana Roop Singh Bhullar advanced to the final round of the qualifying singles draw.
After a 6-2, 6-1 victory over FAU’s Stefan Burnett, Bhullar will face Kennesaw State’s Sam Slade in the final round of qualifying play at 8:30 a.m. on Friday with a spot in the main singles draw at stake. He is the only Seminole in the qualifying bracket.
On Friday in the singles main draw, junior Terrance Whitehurst will play Georgia Tech’s Chris Yun at 10:00a.m. Redshirt junior Lucas Poullain will go against FGCU’s Ezequiel Cerrini at 10:30 a.m., while junior Guy Iradukunda will battle Sebastian Acuna of Georgia State at 12:00p.m.
Continuing on Friday, sophomore Aziz Dougaz, who is ranked No. 119 in the nation, will face Florida’s Maxx Lipman at noon while freshman Alex Knaff will play Georgia’s 109th-ranked Emil Reinberg, at 12:30 p.m.
In doubles, redshirt junior Jose Gracia and Whitehurst will face the winner of Gitin/Jimenz of FAU and Yun/Yun of Georgia Tech, while Dougaz/Iradakunda will play the winner of UNF’s Kecic/Goldberg and UCF’s de Fraia/Mopuri.
Bhullar/Knaff will do battle with Florida’s Guillin/Madonia.
Doubles play will not begin before 3:00 p.m.
The winners of the singles and doubles draws will qualify for the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam, will be held Nov. 3-6 in Flushing Meadows, NY.
Last season, then-senior Benjamin Lock won the qualifying round at the National Indoor Championships.
The singles main draw will begin Friday at 10:00 a.m., with the doubles draw following. Play will continue until the finals on Monday Oct. 24 starting at 9:00 a.m.
