Blixt Leads Seminoles On First Day Of U.S. Collegiate Men’s Golf Championship

April 9, 2007

ALPHARETTA, Ga. –
Junior Jonas Blixt shot a one-over par 73 and is tied for 13th in the individual standings after the first round of the second annual United States Collegiate Championship on the Lakeside Course at The Golf Club of Georgia. The Seminoles, who are ranked 19th in the latest GolfStat / Sagarin Rankings, are tied for 14th in the team standings and begin play in Tuesday’s second round only 12 strokes from moving into the top five in the team standings.

Georgia Tech and Clemson hold the first round team lead after both ACC teams shot identical scores of 292. Clemson is looking to win the event for the second consecutive year and emerge as the only team champion the event has ever known after 54 holes when play is completed on Wednesday. Tanner Ervin of Clemson and Chris Kirk of Georgia are tied atop the individual leader board with two-under par scores of 70.

Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) was the Seminoles’ best golfer during the first round and is only three strokes off of the individual lead. After a somewhat shaky front nine during which he carded two birdies and four bogies, he calmed down and finished the back nine at one under for his first round score of 73. Blixt was one-under over his final 10 holes of the round.

Sophomore Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) played well and carded a four-over par 76 over the first 18 holes of the tournament. He was one over on the front nine with two birdies and three over on the back nine with one birdie and four holes of par golf.

“Today was a day where experience and talent where a necessity,” said Seminole Head Coach Trey Jones. “When you play against the best teams in the country on a hard golf course it takes four players who are all playing well to compete. I think our freshmen learned a great deal today and will bounce back tomorrow. Jonas showed once again that he can compete with anyone in the country.”
