Bobby Bowden Names Joe Kines To FSU Football Coaching Staff

Jan. 19, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden announced
Tuesday the hiring of Joe Kines as linebacker’s coach at FSU. Kines will
join the Seminole program after coaching at Georgia for the last four

“When Chuck Amato resigned to take the head coaching job at NC State, I
began looking for the closest guy to fit his credentials,” said Bobby
Bowden. “I feel like with the hiring of Joe Kines we can pick up right
were we left off. I’ve always known he was a great coach, but he also
brings us great experience.”

Kines, 55, was the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator from 1995-98, and was
elevated to the position of assistant head coach and defensive ends coach
in 1999. Kines was the head coach at Arkansas in 1992 and was on the
Razorback staff from 1991-94. Before his work at Arkansas, Kines coached
the linebackers for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1987-90.

Prior to joining the Bucs’ staff, Kines served as defensive coordinator
and inside linebackers coach at Alabama (1985-86), assistant head coach and
defensive coordinator at Florida (1979-84), linebacker coach at Clemson
(1977-78), and defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at
Jacksonville State (1972-76).

As a graduate of Cedartown (Ga.) High School, Kines has a bachelor’s and
master’s degree from Jacksonville State. He and his wife, Rubye, have a
daughter, Susan, married to Keith Langston and one grandson, Matthew Reed.

“We’re delighted to have Joe on our defensive staff,” said FSU defensive
coordinator Mickey Andrews. “Not only is he a fantastic coach, but he is
an outstanding man as well. His experience at the high school, college and
professional level, his work ethic, and his commitment to excellence fits
the needs of the position extremely well.”

Coach Bowden also said he would make no other announcements about staff
assignments until after the recruiting period is over.
