Lorenzo Booker gained 61 yards on 10 carries and wide receiver Dominic Robinson gained 110 yards on six receptions and scored two touchdowns to lead the Seminole offense in a 92-play scrimmage on Saturday. Defensive end Chauncey Davis had two sacks and linebacker Buster Davis had one and a half sacks and an interception to lead the defense.
Booker, a redshirt freshman, had his longest gain of 19 yards on his seventh carry, and he turned several plays into highlight material with moves at the line of scrimmage. Robinson, a junior from California, grabbed touchdown receptions of nine yards from Chris Rix and 19 yards from Wyatt Sexton and the longest catch of the day at 45 yards.
“Booker ran real well,” said FSU head coach Bobby Bowden. “He makes a three yard run look like an All-American highlight. He was kind of the star of the scrimmage. (Xavier) Beitia kicked well also.”
FSU’s patchwork defensive line this spring came through with big plays including 10 sacks by eight different players. The pass defense benefited from the pressure as Leroy Smith intercepted Rix’s first pass of the day and returned it 35 yards. Buster Davis picked off a batted Sexton pass in the middle of the defense for his interception.
“Overall, it was a good scrimmage,” said Bowden. “We improved in some areas. It would be nice if you could scrimmage 20 more days just like this with no injuries, but you can’t. There was good and bad out there, but there was improvement. We had pretty good hitting and I liked that.
Rix completed 12 of 19 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns, including touchdown passes of nine and 27 yards to P.K. Sam. He did not throw an interception after his first pass of the day. Sexton completed 10 of his 13 pass attempts for 126 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
“We still need to work on the fundamentals and improve there. We still need to get better at blocking and tackling.”
Spring drills will conclude for the Seminoles on April 12 with the annual spring game scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
