TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the second time this season, sophomore Daneika Borthwick captured the ACC Player of the Week honors announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
“She should be very proud,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “She’s done a fantastic job of getting the attention of our conference. Our entire team should be very proud for this honor.”
The Cumbria, England native grabbed the award after delivering a historical clinching point against the 11th – ranked Miami Hurricanes on Saturday.
Florida State (No. 25) found itself in a 3-1 hole with three singles matches left in play. After seniors Francesca Segarelli and Amy Sargeant won their duals to even the score 3-3, Borthwick had gone ahead 1-0 in the third set. However, she fell behind into 2-5, 15-40 deficit to No. 52 Kelsey Laurente on court one.
Borthwick recharged and captured the next two games, pulling the score to 5-4 before she broke Laurente’s serve to tie the score 5-5. Both ladies held their serves, forcing the match to be decided in a tiebreak.
The 35th ranked player in the nation handled the pressure and closed out the tiebreak, winning the match 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3).
With her seventh victory over a ranked player this year, Borthwick lifted the Seminoles to their fifth win over the Hurricanes in program history and the first since 2008. It was also the first win over a top 25 program this year as Florida State moved to 8-1, marking the best start since the 2008 season.
“You don’t get the opportunity to dig yourself out of a hole and lead your team to victory very often,” Hyde said. “But when you do, you have to take full advantage of it and she did a tremendous job on Saturday to bring it home for the `Noles.”
Borthwick first garnered ACC Player of the Week honors just 21 days ago after she defeated No. 29 Katie Vasenina 6-4, 6-4 on court one. She also teamed up with Kerrie Cartwright to defeat Vasenina and Loreta Alonso in doubles, 8-4. The USF pair was ranked No. 50 in the nation.
The Seminoles will be back on court on Friday at 3 p.m. for a match against No. 18 Clemson. For more information on the match, check back to Seminoles.com, twitter and Facebook.
