PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Florida State women’s tennis team competed in the Riviera All-American Qualifiers on Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Coming off of three straight wins to advance to the qualifying rounds, senior Daneika Borthwick continued her west coast success in the first round of the Riviera All-American Qualifiers. As the tournament progresses so does the level of opposing talent, but that didn’t stop Borthwick from rallying off victories in eight straight sets. After a back-and-forth first set, Borthwick was able to dial in and dominate the second set to complete the two set sweep. The Cumbria, England native defeated No. 121 ranked Shannon Hudson of Arkansas in straight sets 7-6, 6-0.
“Daneika was able to overcome Shannon Hudson from Arkansas by staying mentally sharp and keeping a balance between attacking and mixing up the ball,” Assistant Coach Zsuzsanna Fodor said.
The victory gave Borthwick two ranked wins to begin the fall season. She previous knocked off Texas Tech’s No. 113 ranked Kenna Kilgo to reach the qualifying rounds.
In her second match of the day, Borthwick fell to No. 60 ranked Kiara Fabikova from California in a tight match 4-6, 6-7.
“There was little room to make mistakes in this match,” Fodor said. “It was a very exciting match where both player presented high level of tennis skills.”
In her first match at Florida State No. 79 ranked junior Yukako Noi showed that she is going to be a force for the Seminoles this season. The transfer from VCU faced off against No. 69 ranked Gabriella De Santis from Ohio State in the first round. Noi made quick work of De Santis and defeated the Buckeye in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. The only junior on the Florida State roster, Noi was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team in 2013 and 2014, and came into this season as the highest ranked singles Seminole player. Noi had a difficult matchup in her second match of the day when she went toe-to-toe with Texas A&M’s No. 34 ranked Saska Gavrilovska and lost 6-3, 7-6.
“We had our opportunities in this match, especially after establishing a lead in the second set,” Fodor said. “We will work on turning those opportunities into tangible points in the future.”
Borthwick and teammate senior Kerrie Cartwright will play later this week and are ranked the No. 9 doubles team in the nation – the highest preseason doubles ranking in school history.
“It was great to be exposed to such challenging matches at this tournament early in the season, which will give us the opportunity to make some important adjustments for the future,” Fodor said.
