Florida State’s men’s tennis team went 4-7 in the first round of singles at the J. Webb Horton Classic, Thursday, January 11th. The No. 15 ranked team sent seven Seminoles to Florida Gulf Coast University, including senior Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), sophomores Andrew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.), Ryan Boyajian (Weston, Fla.) and Chris Cloer (Brevard, NC) and freshmen Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.), Bradley Mixson (Miami, Fla.) and Michael O’Shea (Boca Raton, Fla.).
In round one, Aubone defeated Illinois’ Ruben Gonzales 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 while Ryan Rowe of Illinois, ranked No. 11 in the country, defeated Sucupira 6-4, 6-2. In a tight match, Mixson defeated Illinois’ Brandon Davis 7-6(4), 6-4 while Boyajian defeated fighting Illini Jordan Knue 6-1, 7-5. In the final bout of the day, O’Shea overcame Middle Tennessee’s Alex McCann 6-3, 6-2.
