Breaking Down the Meet With Sophomore Meredith Urban

Oct. 30, 2004

Sophomore Meredith Urban sits down with Florida State Sports Information to break down the meet, course and competition at the 2004 Atlantic Coast Cross Country Championships. The event takes place at the University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park on Saturday, October 30, 2004.

What did you hear about the race prior to getting to Maryland?

I heard that the competition is going to be really tough because we are going in seeded fifth. We have a chance to do really well though. We are just looking to go in and get a good place and maybe pick up some at-large wins to continue progressing. Coach (Bob Braman) told us we’re strong and we have an advantage over some teams because we’re tough. It will come down to who’s going to tough it out.

When you got to the golf course, what were your first thoughts on the layout?

I’ve never seen a golf course this hilly. You have to get a good start and come out fast. It gets narrow very quickly and there are a lot of turns and hills. The turns are sharp going from fairway to fairway. It’s extremely hilly.

After you ran the course during the preview practice period, what were you thoughts?

The first thing I noticed was that the mile markers were marked but not the Ks. It’s nice to know the K markers for the last 2Ks because there is a huge difference between running a 5K and 6K.

Did it change your expectations and mentality?

Yes, going into the race we heard there were only two hills. Then we ran the race and found out there were only two downhills – the rest are up. It’s going to be difficult – with the course and competition. The desire to get wins will work it out though. Everyone’s got to run the same hills.

Urban along with her Seminole teammates will run the course today. The women begin at 10:00 a.m. while the men start at 11:00 a.m. For updated information and results, check the Tribe’s website at www.seminnles.com
