Oct. 10, 2004

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –
Florida State’s Whitney Brummett became the first freshman since the spring of 2003 to finish a tournament as the Seminoles individual leader as she finished in a tie for 20th place at the Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Course at the University of North Carolina. Brummett and sophomore Jaclyn Burch finished tied in the individual standings with identical scores of 229. Florida State finished ninth in the team standings.

Auburn’s Maria Martinez earned individual medalist honors as she shot a one-under par 71 in the final round to finish with a four-under par score of 212. She finished one stroke ahead of Duke’s Brittany Lang and two strokes ahead of the Duke’s Liz Janangelo. Duke claimed the team championship while Auburn finished second and Texas third.

Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) earned three career-bests in the second tournament of her career. She earned her career-best finish of tied for 20th; her best career-single round score of 72 (in the second round) and career-best tournament score (229). Brummett became the first Seminole to lead the team since Caroline Larsson led the team at the 2003 NCAA East Regional. It was also her first career top 20 individual finish.

Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) led the Seminoles in the third round with a five-over par 77 and finished in a tie for 28th place in the individual standings. She finished with a 232 total for the 54-hole event. Larsson cut 10 strokes from the first tournament of the fall season after carding a 76 in the first round.

Burch (Wildwood, Mo.), who finished tied with Brummett for 20th place, carded a 78 in Sunday’s final round. She tied her season-low with a 74 in the second round and has now earned two top-20 individual finishes. Burch finished in a tied for 19th place at the Ann Rhoads/University of Alabama Invitational during the fall of 2003.

Florida State plays its third event of the fall season as it travels to the Lady Paladin Invitational at Furman University (Oct. 22-24) before closing out its fall season at the FSU hosted ACC/SEC Challenge at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort (Oct. 29-31) in Destin, Fla.
