Oct. 8, 2005

Chapel Hill, N.C. –
Florida State sophomore Whitney Brummett has moved into a tie for ninth place in the individual standings and her play has lifted the Seminole women’s golf team into tenth place after two rounds of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Course. Brummett shot a 75 in Saturday’s second round and has a 148 total for the first 36 holes of the event. As the team, the Seminoles improved by 15 strokes in the second round and have put themselves within striking distance of the top five in the team standings heading into the final day of competition.

No. 1 ranked Duke continues to lead the event for the second consecutive round. Auburn has pulled to within four strokes of the Blue Devils after shooting a team best 286 in the second round. Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M shot a seven-under par 65 and enters the third round with a five stroke lead over Maria Martinez of Auburn, the defending tournament champion.

Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) shot a 75 in the second round after carding a 73 in the first round. Her total of 158 has her only four strokes out of the top five and only 12 strokes behind Knoll, the individual leader. Brummett has earned three career top 10 finishes with her most recent coming at the spring 2005 Ryder/Florida Championship when she finished in a tie for third place.

Junior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) and senior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) played well and played like the Seminoles’ two most experienced upperclassmen. Burch recovered from an 85 in the first round to shoot an even par 72 for a 157 total. She was one of 15 golfers in the field to shoot even par or better in the second round. Larsson also played well as she shot a one-over par 73 for a 157 total. She is now in a tie for 17th place in the individual standings with a total of 149 for the first 36 holes.
